Te Rāhui Herenga Waka Whakatāne
Whakatāne’s Boat Harbour
Tūruapō - Our Vision
Te Rāhui is a proposed project that is a cornerstone of our region’s recovery plan delivering social restoration, economic restoration, and environmental restoration to Whakatāne. Rebuilding and developing for the future generation.

Stage by stage
View this video to see how Te Rāhui Herenga Waka will be constructed in a three stage process, in preparation for welcoming its first vessels in mid 2024.
Taiao - The Environment
Te Rāhui Herenga Waka Whakatāne is located within a dynamic river environment and is designed to optimise environmental outcomes for the Awa and wider environment. This includes remediation of adjacent wetland to restore local biodiversity and water quality, as well as a world leading standard of marina operations that will minimise the environmental impact of associated vessels and service businesses.
Find out how we will achieve this.

The Operation
When complete in 2024, Te Rāhui Herenga Waka will be a world class marina operation in the town of Whakatāne, on New Zealand’s east coast. Stage one of the project will provide commercial boat operators with access to modern vessel berthing facilities, with an 80-100 tonne travel lift and vessel maintenance facilities.
Restoration of the awa
The project aims to restore the connections and mauri of the river for future generations. Before Te Rāhui is developed, material from historic activities on the site will be removed from the land, which will be restored and improved. Materials will be carefully re-used in earth works, re-used on neighbouring sites, or disposed of in an appropriate manner.
Funding of $19.6 million has been provided by the Crown Regional Holdings Limited (Kānoa) for the build of the boat harbour, and $9.8 million to be contributed by Whakatāne District Council, with Te Rāhui Lands Trust providing the site.
