Project Oversight

 

Five groups maintain oversight of Te Rāhui’s development and, once completed, its operations.  They are the Reference Group, the Harbour User Group, the Tangata Whenua Liaison Group, the Community Liaison Group and the Project Management Group. Find out more about them here.

Reference Group

The purpose of this group is to receive, review and provide feedback on the Project’s management plans and other plans as required.

The group is made up of delegates from the following organisations;

-        Te Rāhui Lands Trust;

-        Te Rūnanga o Ngāti Awa;

-        Bay of Plenty Regional Council;

-        Whakatāne District Council; and

-        Department of Conservation.

The group currently meets monthly.

Tangata Whenua Liaison Group

The purpose of the Tangata Whenua Liaison Group is to facilitate ongoing engagement and information sharing between the Tangata Whenua Liaison Group and the consent holder.

The group is made up of delegates from the following organisations;

  • Ngāti Awa;

  • Ngāti Hokopū ki Te Hokowhitu ā Tū ki Te Rāhui;

  • Ngāti Hokopū ki te Whare ō Toroa;

  • Ngāi Taiwhakaea;

  • Ngāti Pūkeko;

  • Ngāi Te Rangihouhiri;

  • Ngāti Wharepaia;

  • Ngāti Hikakino;

  • Ngāti Rangataua;

  • Ngāti Tamapare; and

  • Te Patuwai.

The Tangata Whenua Liaison Group must establish its own meeting protocols having regard to relevant customary practices and operate in accordance with the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi (the Treaty of Waitangi), especially the principles of consultation, active participation and partnership.

The purpose of the Tangata Whenua Liaison Group is to facilitate ongoing engagement and information sharing between the Tangata Whenua Liaison Group and the consent holder.

The group meets six monthly during the construction stage of the boat harbour. The first meeting was held 4th April 2023.

Community Liaison Group

The purpose of the Community Liaison Group must be to provide a forum to facilitate communication and dialogue between the consent holder and the community on issues concerning the development and operation of the Project.

The group is made up of delegates from the following organisations;

  •  Whakatāne Harbour Care Group;

  • Coastguard Whakatāne;

  • Whakatāne Rowing Club;

  • Whakatāne Harbour Users Group;

  • Whakatāne Ōhope Community Board;

  • Eastern Bay of Plenty Harbourmaster;

  • Tangata Whenua Liaison Group;

  • Department of Conservation;

  • Whakatāne River Care Group;

  • Eastern Bay of Plenty Branch of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society;

  • Local community and representatives of community groups who express an interest in the Project;

  • Eastern Bay Canoe Racing Club; and

  • Whakatane Yacht Club.

The Community Liaison Group meets between 3 and 6 monthly, during the construction stage and dependent on current updates for the group.

Our first meeting was held on 1st December 2022, with adverts placed in the local papers seeking interest from the community to attend.
