Enabling works prepare the site for major construction

Enabling works - jobs that are completed onsite to get ready for major construction - will be completed in the next few months, with the major works likely to commence in the new year when the first contractor has been secured.

This includes clearing of historic timber waste from the site, and establishment of working areas.

“Those in the area will notice fencing, gravel laid in places to create and to allow vehicles and machinery to operate safely and to stop mud from entering the road. We’ll also set up a building for staff on site.”

“We are also progressing detailed design: engineers and specialist disciplines will refine the design to create plans, specifications and estimates required for the construction process. The procurement plan in place is so that contractors can be appointed, and there is a strategy to ensure local employment is prioritised.”

One thing that the project is keeping an eye on is issues with escalating costs, which are affecting all projects across the country. “We know that is going to be a challenge and we are working to ensure that the funding is in place and that we are working smartly,” says Wardale.
