Next opportunity unlocked for locals

The region’s new commercial boat harbour project, Te Rāhui Herenga Waka Whakatāne, is ready to issue its second Request for Proposals to local land owners and businesses.

It is inviting land owners to apply to receive clean soil and sand from the site as it becomes available.

“We have made a commitment to ensuring that Ngāti Awa and all people of Whakatāne are prioritised for opportunities that arise from the construction and operation of Te Rāhui,” says Project Spokesperson Philip Wardale.

“Along with the contractor labour involved, this is likely to benefit a project or site that needs clean fill and which can show they will do it in an environmentally responsible way.

Phil explains that timber, bark and wood ends will be removed separately, leaving regular topsoil and sand that has been tested and found to be clean.

There are large amounts of soil and it may be utilised by more than one project.

The material is likely to be available throughout 2023.

Those interested should email info@terahui.nz for a copy of the Request for Proposal document.
